Portlick Milennium Forest situated in Co. Westmeath is on the eastern side of Lough Ree, approximately five kilometres north-west of the village of Glasson and eight kilometres north of Athlone. It is a one of the most enjoyable walking areas along the shores of Lough Ree. Most of the tracks are designed for walkers but there is also a track that runs along the outside of the wood which has been designated for horse-riders. There is a carpark and adjacent toilet block which is maintained by Westmeath County Council. There are many other trails dotted around the area such as Glasson Bog, Killinure Walk and the Kilkenny West Walk. Some of the trails are only accessible by dingy or boat so we would recommend to take caution when heading out on the water and make sure the weather is safe.

These include; horse-drawn machinery restored to the original working order, trades-mans tools and butter-making equipment. For those with an interest in the lifestyle of bygone days, the Museum hosts laundry memorabilia, old and rare washing machines, 1930’s old-style thatched bar & grocery, old-style sheep shears, radios, gramophones and a large collection of 78rpm records, shop dockets and bill-heads, sports display McCormacks photography room where the contents include dark rooms finishing r D & P line, camera’s enlargers and B & W colour processors. as well as much, much more.

There are many places to sit and relax and even an ideal location to have picnic if you like, if not there is a gorgeous café on the ground of the castle just as you pay to enter. With plenty of options for all of the family from guided tours, to learning the heritage of the castle and its surrounds to discovering the flora and fauna of the gardens. The Castle only opens to certain groups when there is permits given and then the family will one their doors to guests but it is a beauty to behold if you don’t get the opportunity to enter.

Athlone castle was built for King John of England by his Irish justiciar Bishop John De Gray of Norwich. It has many of the characteristics of a Napoleonic fortification as it was remodelled during that period to defend the crossing point of the Shannon. This Norman Castle, dating from the 13th century, dominates the town and was central to the siege of Athlone in 1961. The castle celebrated its 800th Anniversary in 2010. The facilities are once again being re-developed to bring the standards of interpretation and display in line with the visitor expectations of the twenty-first century. The Keep of the Castle will be used to tell the dramatic story of the famous Siege of Athlone while the other buildings will house a modern interpretative centre focusing on Athlone, the Castle and the periods both before and after the Siege. There will also be a new presentation on the life and times of John Count McCormack Athlone’s most famous export.
