The Sagrada Família Basilica, located in Barcelona, is one of the most iconic churches in the world and the most famous work of architect Antoni Gaudí. Construction began in 1882 as a private initiative and has been funded ever since through donations and visitor ticket sales.
Gaudí took over the project in 1883 and completely transformed it, conceiving the basilica as a deeply religious and symbolic work inspired by nature, geometry, and Christian faith. He devoted the final years of his life almost entirely to the Sagrada Família. After his death in 1926, following a tram accident, the project continued based on his plans, models, and writings.
Construction was interrupted several times, most notably during the Spanish Civil War, when part of the original material was destroyed. Despite this, successive generations of architects have carried on the work, respecting Gaudí’s vision while combining traditional craftsmanship with modern technology.
The basilica is renowned for its three façades—Nativity, Passion, and Glory—each representing a key moment in the life of Jesus Christ, as well as for its towers, which will total 18 when completed. In 2010, the church was consecrated by Pope Benedict XVI and declared a minor basilica. Although still under construction, the Sagrada Família has become a universal symbol of Barcelona and of Gaudí’s genius.
