Cordoba, the capital of Islamic Spain, has an extraordinary monument and cultural heritage. The city has four World Heritage sites: the Mosque-Cathedral, by extension the third largest mosque in the world; the old quarter that surrounds it, the Fiesta de los Patios, and Medina Azahara. The best way to enjoy Cordoba is to explore it on foot. Roam its streets en route to courtyards and squares decorated with brightly coloured flowers, head to the Alcázar that was home to the Catholic Monarchs until the conquest of Granada, and explore the Jewish quarter to discover the only synagogue in Andalusia. Learn more about the history of Cordoba in museums such as the Casa Andalusi and the Archaeological Museum. Children will love the Ciudad de los Niños, next to the Zoo, and a visit to the botanical garden, where they can go canoeing on the Guadalquivir River. Just 8 km away is the majestic palace city of Medina Azahara, built by Abd-al Rahman III and magnificently preserved today. Nearby, 20 km away, stands the impressive castle of Almodóvar with its towers and battlements. Montoro, a mini-Toledo in Andalusia is just over 40 km from Cordoba.
