For more than a century, Fairmont Hotel Macdonald has effortlessly delivered timeless luxury in the heart of downtown Edmonton. Nestled upon the North Saskatchewan River Valley, the hotel’s charm and ever-evolving elegance has earned it the spotlight as one of the city’s most sought-after locations. The Grand Trunk Pacific Railway Company opened Fairmont Hotel Macdonald on July 5, 1915. Built as an early 20th-century railway hotel, Edmonton’s Châteauesque-styled building was designed to serve the passengers of Canada’s then-expanding rail network into Alberta. Upon its opening in the summer of 1915, guests would depart train cabins for hotel rooms at what was deemed the grand “Chateau on the River,” marking the beginning of a legacy of elegance and unparalleled hospitality in Edmonton. Today, the celebrated hotel has reimagined its rooms, dining venues, event spaces, and Fairmont Gold – the property’s exclusive and personalized boutique experience. Another stunning chapter for Edmonton’s forever landmark begins now.
