This is one of the landmarks among the impressive avenues and open spaces north of Dong Khoi. The huge red-brick edifice with twin spires is placed between two streams of traffic and is a clear reminder that the French once ruled this city. Inside, the decor is relatively austere, but the church gets very full and very lively during services. This peaceful place is perfect for quiet contemplation. Sunday Mass is held at 9:30am.

One of HCMC's most popular attractions, Saigon Central Post Office is the largest post office in Vietnam. Built between 1886 and 1891 by renowned architect Gustave Eiffel, the vaulted roof and arched windows are reminiscent of early European railway stations. An enormous picture of Ho Chi Minh overlooks proceedings. Even if you don't have a bundle of postcards to send to the relatives back home, you can still visit Saigon Central Post Office and admire the interior scenery.

Saigon Opera House was built in 1898 by the French architect – Eugene Ferret, following the “flamboyant” style of the French Third Republic. It was set to be two meters higher than the street surface with two door layers, in order to prevent traffic noise. Built in parallel structure, the Opera House is located on the city’s center axis, connecting the metro station and roundabout in front of Ben Thanh market. From a distance, the Opera House looks like a beautiful gigantic city gate. The architecture boasts stone-carved ornaments and statues at the entrance, crystal chandeliers, and shiny granite floor at the lobby area – all built with materials imported from France. The oval auditorium with 468 seats offers good view from every seat. It is also echo-free and therefore preserves all the sound inside the theatre.

On April 30, 1975, Communist tanks smashed through the gates of what was then the symbol of the South Vietnamese government, and marked the end of the Vietnam war. The palace was formerly known as Independence Palace and was built in 1966 on the site of Norodom Palace. Guides at the renamed Reunification Palace now offer daily tours to visitors. The Palace is also noted for its striking 1960s architecture, the creation of Paris-trained Vietnamese architect Ngo Viet Thu. Included on the tour are visits to conference rooms, the Presidential Receiving Room, basement tunnels and war rooms, a telecommunications center and the residential quarters, as well as a back terrace complete with helipad. A video presentation of Vietnamese history is available in several languages.

Ho Chi Minh City's Ben Thanh Market sells everything in a packed grid. Clothes and fabric in front give way to kitchenware and souvenirs, backing on to food and produce. Be prepared as sellers here are particularly intense. There are cheaper markets in town, but Ben Thanh's history and central Saigon location make it a popular stop for tourists. Ben Thanh Market is one of the best tourist attractions in HCMC. There are over 3000 vendor stalls in Ben Thanh. Everything from ceramics, clothes, watches, lighters, t-shirts, coffee, handbags, shoes, conical hats, custom made suits and dresses to noodle soup and fruit smoothies is sold here. Both vendors inside and hawkers outside Ben Thanh Market are somewhat aggressive so be prepared to politely decline or ignore their frequent terse sales pitches should you not be ready to buy at first sight.

The Fine Arts Museum of HCMC displays works of art of both domestic and regional artists, as well as artifacts that hold crucial cultural and historical values and may reflect a whole period of Vietnamese history. The museum is divided into two main sections: with one focusing on old fine arts and the other exhibiting contemporary fine arts and handicrafts produced by some of the most outstanding artists in the country and region. This museum is set inside an exquisite French colonial villa. The first floor hosts rotating exhibits of contemporary art and the second floor features sketches, paintings and statues, many of which focus on resistance to colonial rulers. The third floor shows older works from Vietnam's history. Check out the antique working elevator that slowly glides its way up the floors. The Fine Arts Museum of Saigon is also home to many valuable Cham, Indian and Khmer artifacts that were created between the 7th and 17th centuries. Also on display are works from famous foreign artists and handicrafts created by Vietnam's ethnic groups. Established in September 1987 by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, the Fine Arts Museum's building was once a centre of commerce.

Also known as Chua Ba, this beautiful Saigon pagoda was built by the Chinese in the early 19th century. It is one of the most active temples in Cho Lon and has an otherworldly atmosphere owing to the smoking rings of swirling incense and majestic interior furnishings. It is dedicated to Thien Hau, goddess of the sea and protector of sailors. Easily one of the most favourite tourist attractions in Ho Chi Minh City, Thien Hau Pagoda is located on Nguyen Trai in Cho Lon. Be sure to keep an eye out for the porcelain dioramas that decorate the roof and walls. The dioramas depict duels on horseback, arena fighting and dragons and turtles. Interesting, Saigon's Thien Hau Pagoda is dedicated to a goddess, Thien Hau, who is neither specifically Buddhist nor Taoist.

Cu Chi Tunnels are a vast network of underground tunnels from the 1940s, expanded by guerrilla Viet Cong during the American War. The tunnels were hiding places, as well as communication and supply routes, hospitals and living quarters. Sections of the tunnel system large enough for a 40kg person have been widened to cater for larger bodies, but it's still a tight fit. Cu Chi is a short drive from HCMC and most Saigon tour companies offer day trips. When in HCMC take a tour of the Cu Chi Tunnels, easy accessible by road or boat up the Saigon River. As the Viet Cong's base of operations for the Tet Offensive in 1968, the Cu Chi Tunnels played a chief role in the Vietnamese winning the American War. The tunnels frustrated the Americans by drawing out the war and extending U.S. fatalities and costs until the United States finally withdrew in 1972 and the Republic of Vietnam fell in 1975.

The largest pagoda in Ho Chi Minh City is a blend of modern influence and traditional Japanese and Vietnamese culture. It is home to a sanctuary and a seven-floor, 40-metre high tower. People come here to pay homage to Siddhartha Gautama, Buddha himself, and Samantabhadra, the Lord of Truth and Manjusri. Make sure to leave time to visit Vinh Nghiem Pagoda when sightseeing in Saigon. Saigon's Vinh Nghiem Pagoda was built between 1964 and 1971 based on the design of architect Nguyen Ba Lang. The area of the complex is somewhere in the range of 8,000 square metres. Look for the 25-metre tall Devotee Relic four-storey Tower, built in 1982, situated behind the pagoda. The Japan-Vietnam Friendship Association of HCMC constructed the Kwan-Yin tower.

Rummage through the treasure trove of stone statues, lamps, ceramic pots, clocks and coins and you unearth a rare find. Be aware that only 30% of the goods on display are real antiques, the rest are reproductions. Cap your day with a visit to the HCMC Fine Arts Museum only a few blocks away. Saigon's antique market holds many interesting finds regardless of authenticity. The shops on Le Cong Kieu are crammed to the rafters with art, coins, Buddhas furniture, clocks - even old European electronics! Make an afternoon of it by walking over from Ben Thanh Market, a short distance away. After you tire of browsing antiques head to the Fine Arts Museum a short stroll away.

Tom Wardle is Brooklyn-based British singer/guitarist, bringing his brand of acoustic pop, rock and soul to high-end parties in the New York City, the Hamptons and across the US, as well as Turks And Caicos. Tom’s mix of acoustic guitar and his raspy vocals have captured significant press attention since his move to the States, with Rolling Stone Magazine saying his “gritty vocals echo Rod Stewart”, and the socialite Hamptons Magazine calling his music “Perfect for a summer’s evening”, when they profiled him on his move over to the States. His recent client list includes such luxury brands as Christian Dior, Louis Vuitton, Manolo Blahnik and Vogue Magazine, as well as events for fashion mogul Donna Karan. Tom has been a live music favourite across the Hamptons for the last six years, becoming a summer staple at such hotspots as Wölffer Estate, Gurney’s Montauk and Bounce Beach to name a few.
