The Kalamazoo Mall, the first outdoor pedestrian shopping mall in the United States, is a section of Burdick Street in downtown Kalamazoo, Michigan. Built for $60,000 and opened in 1959, the pedestrian mall became the first of several hundred built in the United States. The bold effort to make a downtown street car-free as a spur to urban vitality and a defense against suburbanization drew national attention to Kalamazoo, which was dubbed "Mall City". Initially, two blocks of Burdick Street were closed; a third block was added the following year and a fourth in 1975. In 1998, the southern two blocks were reopened to auto traffic, as a single southbound lane only. Today, the historic Kalamazoo Mall remains a staple in Downtown Kalamazoo and features revitalized Art Deco buildings, specialty shops, chic restaurants, unique coffee shops and lively brewpubs!

Wings Event Center was built in 1974 and has been home to the Kalamazoo Wings of the ECHL since the 2009-10 season. Wings Event Center is a full entertainment venue offering concerts, professional hockey, family shows and trade shows. The building capacity is 6,300 for festival style concerts, with seating capacity for hockey at 5,113. Wings Event Center features four full-service concourse cafes with three specialty bars located at concourse level. Coming to Kalamazoo to attend Kalamazoo College, Larry Bell started homebrewing in the early 1980s and opened a homebrew supply shop in Downtown Kalamazoo in 1983. As more and more people were requesting samples of his beer, Larry began brewing commercially in a 15 gallon soup pot and opened Kalamazoo Brewing Co., which sold its first beer on Sept. 19, 1985.
