It marks the very center of the city, a lively place at any time of the day, with a wave-patterned pavement originally created in 1848, which has been reproduced throughout Portugal, in Rio de Janeiro and Macau. The Rossio has been a meeting place for people of Lisbon for centuries. Some of the cafés and shops of the square date from the 18th century. The building of the Maria II Theatre and the Public Gardens to the north of the square only made the area more attended by Lisbon high society in the 19th century.

It was conquered from the Moors by the 1st Portuguese King, D. Afonso Henriques in 1147. The castle received important conservation and improvement works from 1940 until 1990, and is today considered one of the most emblematic monuments in Lisbon. It offers his visitants beautiful gardens and from its viewpoints you can see almost every part of the city. There you can see a multimedia show (Olsipónia), a dark camera (Ulisses Tower – a 360º journey over Lisbon), an exhibition area, a restaurant “Casa do Leão” and thematic shops.

The name of “Terreiro do Paço” (Royal Palace Square), had its origin in the 16th century when the king changed the Palace from Castelo de São Jorge to this square. The buildings were all destroyed by the 1755 earthquake, and the square was totally rebuilt by Marquês de Pombal, Minister of King D. José I. Having contributed for the reconstruction plans the bourgeous, financial and business class, explains the later name of “Commerce Square”. During centuries this square was the great reception hall for visitors arriving by sea, since it was the dock where the Kings and Heads of State would disembark when visiting Lisbon. Today it is headquarter of governmental departments. In the center of the square you can observe the statue of King José the 1st, work of the famous sculptor Machado de Castro. On the north side of the square, there is the Triumphal Arch, which marks the entrance in Rua Augusta and Baixa quarter

From the original church only the crypt is visible. The façade in is Baroque, with Rococo and Neo classic architectonic elements. Afonso Henriques. It is said that was built over an old Muslim mosque, being the project in Romanesque style and very similar to the Coimbra Cathedral. However, through the centuries, the cathedral suffered many alterations, mostly in gothic style, with the construction of the Bartolomeu Jones (on the north side), the irregularly shaped Cloister and the new Deambulatory which was ordered the construction by King Afonso the 4th to serve as pantheon for him and his family. During the 17th and 18th century, several alterations were made in baroque style, changing the decoration of the altars and chancel. Already in the 20th century, many works were made in order to restore the primary medieval atmosphere of the Cathedral.

In the 15th century a big hospital was built on this square (Hospital de Todos os Santos), but it was totally destroyed after the 1755 earthquake. The square was all rebuilt after this big earthquake, during the government of Marquês de Pombal, minister of the Kingdom of D. José I, who was responsible for all the planning, reconstruction and restoration works in this area, which was much damaged, and that is why this part of Lisbon is called “Baixa Pombalina”. In 1885, a covered market was built here (it was demolished in 1950), and Figueira square became the biggest market of Lisbon. Figueira square maintains the original 4 floor buildings that house shops, restaurants and the most pleasant “esplanadas”, where you can have a cup of traditional coffee “bica”. In the center of this square, there is a bronze statue of King João I, a work of Leopoldo de Almeida.
