The city of Santa Marta is located on the shore of the Bay of Santa Marta on the Caribbean Sea on the foothills of the Sierra Nevada whose peaks can be seen on clear days from the beach. The capital of the department of Magdalena, which was founded in 1525, is one of the oldest cities in South America.
