Áreas protegidas El Parque Natural del Sudoeste Alentejano y Costa Vicentina es el tramo mejor conservado de la costa europea, que abarca más de 100 km, desde Porto Covo en el Alentejo hasta Burgau en el Algarve. El parque incluye varias especies únicas de vida animal y vegetal, y es visitado por muchos zoólogos y botánicos de todas partes del mundo. El paisaje está marcado por escarpados acantilados, representados en el logotipo del parque, a los que siglos de erosión han dado diversas formas y colores. Se pueden observar muchas especies de aves, como las raras águilas pescadoras. La especie más rara es la cigüeña blanca, dado que es el único lugar del mundo donde construyen sus nidos en las rocas de la orilla del mar.
