Facility Restrictions

Due to proximity to a residential area, amplified music sound will be allowed inside, only. Please review Approved List of Musicians’ to hire a Disc Jockey – as they must play inside only. Live Bands are limited to 4 (four) members total – including singer. All live music must be approved, in advance of signing the contract, with the Special Events Staff at the aquarium. Music indoors must be kept to a minimum level. Acoustic music is allowed inside and outside. ALL ENTERTAINMENT MUST END AT 9:45 P.M. All entertainment is subject to approval, in advance of signing the contract, by the Special Events Department. No rice, birdseed, confetti, sand, or marine life (including any thing that was once living in the ocean) will be allowed on the premises. No adhesive materials, double-sided tape can be used to adhere to any surface at the aquarium. All décor must be approved in advance before the event. The aquarium is a non-smoking facility. Smoking is permitted only outside the front gates. Priority will be given to aquarium-related events. The aquarium reserves the right to refuse rental to any group or party. Contact the special event office for other special circumstances. SERVICE FOR ALL ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES ENDS AT 9:30 P.M. - LAST CALL IS AT 9:20 PM Kegs of beer are not allowed on the aquarium premises.

Cancellation Policy

The deposit is non-refundable and non-transferable. If cancellation occurs within the last two weeks of the event, the full value of the event fees will be withheld.

Space Availability: Galleria - At 3,100 square feet, this beautiful enclosure has an ocean view and connects the aquarium and museum. It will accommodate 400 people for a stand-up reception, 200 for a sit-down dinner and 160 for buffet style service, and has a spacious, yet elegant atmosphere. Entrance Courtyard - At 3,100 square feet, this is an entirely open-air space, and a good area in which to extend your party from the indoor Galleria. It will accommodate 200 for a reception and 100 for a sit-down dinner. Preuss Tide-Pool Plaza - At 3,400 square feet, this open-air space has two split-levels and a tide pool exhibit in the center. Accessible from inside the Galleria, it will accommodate 300 people for a stand-up reception, or 120 for a sit-down dinner. A spectacular location during sunset. Education Courtyard - At 3,150 square feet, this open-air courtyard is enclosed on four sides. It will accommodate 250 people for a stand-up reception, or 100 seated, and is a lovely area for a variety of event activities. Smargon Exhibit Courtyard - At 7,000 square feet, this open-air courtyard features our newest exhibit, Boundless Energy – an interactive experience that celebrates renewable energy from the sun, the wind and ocean motion. Within the courtyard, which overlooks La Jolla Shores and offers one of the best ocean vistas in Southern California, guests can tour towering wind turbines, build dams and race boats at a pair of wave tables, and even trigger a playful water sculpture by peddling stationary bikes and hand cranks. Full Facility - A maximum of 1,200 guests can be accommodated if all interior areas and outdoor courtyards are utilized.
