The Czech Village / New Bohemia Main Street District is a vibrant urban neighborhood model for historic preservation and economic development in the Midwest, a destination for both residents and visitors. Building on its unique history, the District is a dynamic arts and culture venue that provides interesting, authentic and enriching experiences with a variety of shopping, dining, arts and cultural entertainment opportunities that can only be found here.
he Czech Village/New Bohemia Main Street District was formed in May of 2009 to breathe economic life into a historic area of Cedar Rapids. Established by emigrants, the District had suffered economic decline for many years and was nearly destroyed by record flooding in 2008. Despite these hardships, courageous business owners and residents began the task of rebuilding.
Cedar Rapids is in a period of unprecedented urban and civic renewal. Two of our city’s most unique and important neighborhoods are playing a key role in this rebirth – Czech Village and New Bohemia are fast becoming the city’s flagship district – a magnet for citizens, tourists, and businesses, and a venue for the area’s most exciting events, entertainment, dining, and shopping.
Cedar Rapids is a city that is home to thousands of Czech, Moravian and Slovak immigrants and their decendants since the turn of the Century. Many more Czechs homesteaded and settled the farms and small towns surrounding Cedar Rapids. The Czech Village is a restored section of what was the shopping district for many of those immigrants.
Czech Village History in Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Czechoslovakians, known as Bohemians, have made lasting contributions to the Cedar Rapids community. Czechs began arriving in 1852 to work in local packing plants, and soon a "Little Bohemia" was established in the southwest sector of the city (it is now known as "Czech Village"). Josef Sosel, the first Czech lawyer in the United States, was smuggled out of his native country in a barrel after he was accused of revolutionary activities; Sosel settled in Cedar Rapids, where he played a prominent role in the Czech community. In 1869 Czechs established The Reading Society, which evolved into a Little Theater movement, as well as the Light Guard Band. The Czech-language Cedar Rapids Listy began publication in 1906.

Covert Cocktail Club

Once upon a time in 2016, Matt Levy, founder of Covert Cocktail Club, hosted a secret speakeasy as an intimate place for strangers to gather in his home. The only way to find out about it was via word of mouth. No address was given, the only clue being a sign placed in the window, “Cocktails Here”.
A lot of people thought it was pretty cool, even before The New York Times wrote about it. But that was all pre-pandemic, and this is a new era.
Liberated from the confines of a single location, Covert Cocktail Club now brings the speakeasy right to your door—be it at your home, office, bar mitzvah, dinner party, bachelor/ette party or anywhere you choose!
