Nyhavn
Historiska landmärken
2 km
Especially during summer Nyhavn is the perfect place to end a long day. Have dinner at one of the cosy restaurants or do like the locals and buy a beer from a nearby store and rest your feet at the quayside.
Nyhavn was originally a busy commercial port where ships from all over the world would dock. The area was packed with sailors, ladies of pleasure, pubs and alehouses.
Today the beautiful old houses have been renovated and classy restaurants dominate the old port. Nyhavn is filled with people enjoying the relaxed atmosphere by the canal, jazz music and great food.
Hans Christian Andersen's Nyhavn
No. 9, Nyhavn, is the oldest house in the area dating back to 1681. The design of the house has not been altered since that time.
Many of the houses lining the quays of Nyhavn have been the homes of prominent artists.
Hans Christian Andersen used to live in no. 20. This is where he wrote the fairy-tales 'the Tinder-Box', 'Little Claus and Big Claus', and 'the Princess and the Pea'. He also lived twenty years in no. 67 and two years in no. 18.
The Little Mermaid (Danish: Den lille havfrue) is a bronze statue by Edvard Eriksen, depicting a mermaid. The sculpture is displayed on a rock by the waterside at the Langelinie promenade in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Based on the fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen, the small and unimposing statue is a Copenhagen icon and has been a major tourist attraction since 1913. In recent decades it has become a popular target for defacement by vandals and political activists.
Tivoli's history goes back to 1843.
Its founder, Georg Carstensen, had already been granted permission from King Christian VIII in 1841. The following year, he succeeded in getting a permit to build the pleasure gardens on Copenhagen's embankments, an area just outside the city walls. Building began on the grounds on 1 May 1843, and Tivoli opened its doors for the first time on 15 August.
Tivoli became an instant success. In its first, short season, Tivoli received 175,000 guests. One of the guests was Hans Christian Andersen, who visited on the last night of the season, 11 October. Here, he was inspired to write the description of the emperor's gardens in what he referred to in his diary as "My Chinese adventure", The Nightingale.
Today, Tivoli sees around 4 million guests every year, spread across three seasons: the summer season (approx. 3 million guests), Halloween at Tivoli (approx. 300,000 guests) and Christmas at Tivoli (approx. 800,000 guests).
Four identical palaces surrounding the octagon square comprise the Amalienborg complex and the Royal residences from 1750, with the equestrian statue of King Frederik V in the centre - and the fountain of Amalie Gardens at the waterfront. The new Opera House building stands majestic at the back - overlooking the entrance to Copenhagen’s harbour.
Botanical Garden is located in the centre of Copenhagen. The garden covers an area of 10 hectares and is particularly noted for its extensive complex of historical glasshouses dating from 1874. The garden is open for the public.
The Botanical Garden was first established in 1600 but it was moved twice before it was ultimately given its current location in 1870.
The garden contains more than 13,000 species and is arranged in different sections including: Danish plants (600 species), perennial plants (1,100 species), annual plants (1,100 species), rock gardens with plants from mountaineous areas in Central and Southern Europe and Conifer Hill which is planted with coniferous trees. One of the newest inclusions is a rhododendron garden
Just outside Copenhagen lies the so-called “most beautiful museum in the world,” The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, situated an hour north of Copenhagen. The museum offers a unique interaction between art, nature and the museums’ architecture as well as some exquisite exhibitions. To top it off its sculpture park faces the see, offering a breathtaking panoramic view of the Øresund region
Kronborg Castle
Kronborg Castle or Hamlets Castle - immortalised by Shakespeare - is situated at Helsingør or "Elsinore" and built by King Frederik II in 1574-84 (King from 1559-1588 - ruled Denmark and Norway). After the fire in 1629 - his son the great builder among Danish Kings Christian IV (King from 1577-1648 - ruled Denmark and Norway 1588-1648) completed the building of Kronborg Castle in 1638. Kronborg Castle is built on the spit of North Sealand - and placed at the entrance of Øresund - which was the ideal position to collect Sound Duties from ships entering Øresund to secure state taxes and revenues but also as a fortress to defend the Kingdom of Denmark.
Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen is home to some of Denmark's greatest cultural treasures. The castle was built by Christian IV as a pleasure castle. In the basement you will find the Danish crown jewels and regalia.
Folketinget is the name of Denmark's parliament, which is located in a historical setting at Christiansborg Palace, often just called Borgen (the castle in Danish), on the island of Slotsholmen in Copenhagen.
The Royal Danish Theatre - The Danish National Stage
Denmark’s National Theatre is The Royal Danish Theatre and since 1748 been located at Kongens Nytorv in the very heart of Copenhagen.
Theatre since 1748
The very first Theatre building seated 800 spectators and was at that time to little for a city of the size of Copenhagen. On the occasion of the opening of the theatre in 1748 - there were just 8 actors and 4 actresses - and they performed French comedies. In 1774 the theatre was rebuilt to house a larger audience. The Theatre was a sort of Comedy House and over the following years the Royal Danish Theatre was established as a venue for all the performing arts - ballet - opera - dramas - plays and the royal orchestra.
Round Tower. Built during the reign of Christian IV from 1637 to 1642. The height of the tower - 36meters. In Andersen's fairy tale "Flint" there is a dog with eyes as big as "round tower" - that's what big eyes in a dog. Stages it does not - leads up a gentle winding ascent of 210 meters. In 1716Peter I rode to the top of the tower on horseback, carrying a carriage with his wife, the futureEmpress Catherine I. From the top of the tower offer stunning views of the old Copenhagen.

Strøget is Copenhagen's aorta and one of Europe's longest pedestrian streets with a wealth of shops, from budget-friendly chains to some of the world's most expensive brands. At some point during your stay in the city, you will without a doubt end of here. The 1,1-kilometre stretch covers the streets Frederiksberggade, Nygade, Vimmelskaftet and Østergade and runs from City Hall Square to Kongens Nytorv square. Strøget is most famous for shopping.
Big international brands like Prada, Max Mara, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Mulberry are represented at the end of the street facing up to Kongens Nytorv. If your budget is a little tighter, you will find shops like H&M, Vero Moda and Zara closer to City Hall Square. Strøget is more than shopping, however. Look up and down the side streets during your shopping spree, and you will see several of Copenhagen's beautiful sights and attractions as well as street entertainers.
The long pedestrian street, Strøget, is one of the few places where you should not be cycling in Copenhagen. It is a pedestrian zone and there are always many people, so here it is smarter to park or pull the bike.
The National Museum is Denmark’s largest museum of cultural history. The museum's main domicile is a classical 18th century mansion just a stone's throw from "Strøget" at the center of Copenhagen.
The National Museum is the museum for all Denmark, where you can follow the history of the Danes right down to the present day. And you can get around the world from Greenland to South America.
Frederiksborg Castle is situated in Hillerød, north of Copenhagen. This impressive and unrivalled Renaissance castle was built in the first decades of the 17th century by the legendary Danish King Christian IV and incorporates the best of Renaissance architecture and craftmanship. Frederiksborg Castle is a unique place for superb cultural experiences, scenic walks and boat tours.
Legoland Billund, the original Legoland park, opened on June 7, 1968 in Billund, Denmark. The park is located next to the original Lego factory and Denmark's second busiest airport Billund Airport. Over 1.9 million guests visited the park in 2011 and since the opening more than 50 million guests have visited the park. This makes Legoland the largest tourist attraction in Denmark outside of Copenhagen. The Legoland parks that have since been built are modelled upon Legoland Billund, most noticeably the Miniland area which is made up of millions of Lego bricks.
