Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum
Historiska landmärken
A World Heritage Site since 1980, the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum is a unique prehistoric monument which bears unique testimony to a civilization which has disappeared. The site was discovered during the building of new houses in Paola at the turn of the century, and was reported to the authorities in 1902. Containing evidence from around 4100 B.C. to 2500 B.C., the Hypogeum consists of a series of rock-cut chambers set on three different levels. The Upper Level, which is also the earliest to be created, may have had a monumental structure marking its entrance but its extent is unknown. The Middle Level houses the most elaborate chambers where, albeit with only the use of stone and bone tools, work of extremely high quality and skill is evident. The chambers are similar to those of above-ground megalithic structures and the walls and ceilings of some of them are painted with designs in red ochre, giving the visitor a different, though familiar, view of the internal spaces of a prehistoric structure. The preservation of these paintings has presented one of the biggest challenges to the site’s managers over the years. This remains, to this day, the site’s main conservation concern.

Museum
Esplora is a unique visitor attraction, offering a very enjoyable experience that will make science more appealing and fun for everyone. Visitors may interact with cutting-edge exhibits that deal with different aspects of science. Everyone is encouraged to explore, think and imagine by touching, feeling and using the exhibits in a hands-on, body-on, mind-on approach that we are not used to seeing in such venues. Visitors can make their way to the Planetarium building which offers the Universe exhibition as well as the Planetarium shows on the massive dome screen. The Activity centre is also not to be missed which features regular science shows and workshops. Esplora also boasts a sprawling outdoor area and exhibits, a historical exhibition and the stunning views of Valletta and the Grand Harbour.

Popeye Village, situated in Anchor Bay, is the only still standing filmset in all of Europe. Popeye Village, built in 1979 for the musical movie POPEYE, is nowadays considered as a live tribute to the late Robin Williams, the actor who played the one-eyed sailor – which, coincidently, was his first movie that made it to the big screen. Malta National Aquarium

The Malta National Aquarium has been designed to replicate a number of scenic terrestrial and underwater locations in Malta including the Blue Grotto, the Grand Harbour and also other areas in Gozo and Comino. The displays are cleverly themed to tell a story of cultural and conservational importance related to the Maltese Islands, whilst the animals filling the displays are from native, cold water, and tropical marine as well as freshwater ecosystems.
The main tank of the aquarium houses species from all over the world, including a variety of sharks, rays and coral reef species. This tank is approximately 12 metres in diameter and allows visitors to go through a water tunnel thereby experiencing the fish at a much closer range.
The Aquarium is currently undertaking a number of projects related to cat shark and skate development of local species, as well as spreading awareness about local marine research and conservation.

MUŻA
Museum
MUŻA is Malta’s National Community Art Museum. The Maltese word ‘MUŻA’ signifies ‘inspiration’ and is an acronym for the Maltese title, MUŻ(ew Nazzjonali tal-)A(rti), whilst also acting as a reference to the mythological muses. All works of art on display were selected on the basis of four main stories: Mediterranean, Europe, Empire and The Artist.
Temporary exhibitions and events in the Camerone, Community Space, Corridors and Courtyard complete the MUŻA experience.
Visitors may also enjoy a break at the MUŻA Restaurant, offering art-inspired refreshments.
MUŻA is housed at the Auberge d’Italie, the former base of the Italian Knights of the Order of St John. Completed by 1629, it served many functions over time, including being the seat of the Valletta Museum from 1925 where the first Fine Arts Section was set up. Following post-WWII repairs, the Auberge d’Italie housed several government institutions until in 2018 it was inaugurated as MUŻA.

Fort St Elmo- National War Museum
Museum
Hosted by Fort St Elmo, the National War Museum houses a superb collection of items which takes us back to prehistoric times. Artefacts are displayed in chronological order, commencing from the early phases of the Bronze Age around 2,500 B.C. Two halls are dedicated to Malta’s important role in WW I, the Inter-War Period and Malta’s historical role in the Second World War. Displayed in these halls one can find perhaps the three most important icons of this museum: the Gloster Sea Gladiator N5520 FAITH, Roosevelt’s Jeep ‘Husky’ and Malta award for gallantry, the George Cross. Concluding the walk through Malta’s military role in history are displays dedicated to Malta’s Independence, becoming a Republic, Freedom Day and Malta joining the European Union.

Ħaġar Qim & Mnajdra Temples

The temple of Ħaġar Qim stands on a hilltop overlooking the sea and the islet of Filfla, not more than 2km south-west of the village of Qrendi. At the bottom of the hill, only 500m away, lies another remarkable temple site, Mnajdra found above the southern cliffs. The surrounding landscape is typical Mediterranean garigue and spectacular in its starkness and isolation. The visit of Ħaġar Qim & Mnajdra Temples is spread between the visitor centre which houses the ticketing, reception, shop and exhibition areas and a small 4D theatre. The visitor centre is 110m away from Ħaġar Qim whilst the two temples are then 500m apart from each other.

Fort St Angelo’s intrinsic value for the Maltese Islands and their people knows no comparison. It may not be the oldest, grandest or finest stronghold, but it surely is the boldest memorial of the strategic importance of these tiny islands and of the innumerable lives sacrificed for their dominion since time immemorial. Its control meant effective rule of the Maltese Islands during at least the past thousand years. Indeed, no other fortress has been engaged with the same intensity in the shaping of Malta’s destiny.

Casa Rocca Piccola
Casa Rocca Piccola was built in the 16th Century for Don Pietro La Rocca, a Knight of Malta, and is now the family ancestral home of the 9th Marquis de Piro and his family.
Often described as a ‘living museum’, Casa Rocca Piccola is the only privately owned Palazzo open to the public in Valletta and has a fascinating variety of different things to see which come to life on entertaining guided tours.
At Casa Rocca Piccola, you will also get to see a network of underground passages and tunnels cut out of the rock over its 400 year history which were used during World War II to protect hundreds of people from enemy bombing.
