It depicts the charming beauty and richness in culture of Vietnamese lives in the countryside and the country's urbanization in 60 minute length. The show is a mix of bamboo cirque, acrobatic acts, contemporary dance and theatrical visual art. Live music which echoes the Southern work songs, and scenic lighting design makes the A O Show, which performs at the historic Saigon Opera House, worth seeing when you visit Ho Chi Minh City.

Vincom Center

With more than 250 shops, Vincom Center is Ho Chi Minh City’s biggest shopping mall – so big in fact, that they have separated it into two separate buildings just across the street from each other. Vincom Center A is housed in a delightful French styled period building connected to The Continent Hotel, while Vincom Center B is just behind it, occupying the first five storeys of a modern, glass-fronted skyscraper. If you are looking for international products then this should be your first stop as this is where most international luxury brands have their flagship stores, right in the tourist heart of the city. Notre Dame Cathedral

Built between 1877 and 1883, Notre Dame Cathedral enlivens the heart of Ho Chi Minh City's government quarter, facing Ðong Khoi. A brick, neo-Romanesque church with 40m-high square towers tipped with iron spires, the Catholic cathedral is named after the Virgin Mary. Interior walls are inlaid with devotional tablets and some stained glass survives. English-speaking staff dispense tourist information from 9am to 11am Monday to Saturday.

With its airy corridors and verandas, this elegant 1929 colonial-era yellow-and-white building is stuffed with period details; it is exuberantly tiled throughout and home to some fine (albeit deteriorated) stained glass, as well as one of Saigon's oldest lifts. Hung from the walls is an impressive selection of art, including thoughtful pieces from the modern period. As well as contemporary art, much of it (unsurprisingly) inspired by war, the museum displays historical pieces dating back to the 4th century. These include elegant Funan-era sculptures of Vishnu, the Buddha and other revered figures (carved in both wood and stone), and Cham art dating from the 7th to the 14th century.

Established in 1864, making it one of the oldest zoos in world, the Saigon Zoo and Botanical Garden is one of the best and largest recreational areas in Saigon. Known as Thao Cam Vien locally, it is home to more than 500 animals of more than 100 species and more than 1,800 trees and plants of more than 250 species. This creates a great setting for an afternoon stroll, however there are some areas of the zoo that you may want to avoid, as some of the exhibits and animals have seen better days. Here is a quick guide to the zoo, to help maximize your animal viewing and to prepare the faint of heart for some of the zoo’s rougher patches.

War Remnants Museum

Formerly the Museum of Chinese and American War Crimes, the War Remnants Museum is consistently popular with Western tourists. Few museums anywhere convey the brutality of war and its civilian victims. Many of the atrocities documented here were well-publicised but rarely do Westerners hear the victims of US military action tell their own stories. While some displays are one-sided, many of the most disturbing photographs illustrating US atrocities are from US sources, including those of the infamous My Lai Massacre.

Golden Dragon Water Puppet Theater

Traditional Vietnamese Water Puppet Shows remain one of the cultural draws for most travellers to Ho Chi Minh City. Depicting the culture, traditions and folklore of Vietnamese life, visitors are entertained by puppets acting on a ‘stage’ of water accompanied by live old-fashioned music played on authentic instruments. Shows are performed entirely in Vietnamese which is not a problem for the visiting tourist as the puppet gestures are obvious enough to keep the audience enthralled. The musicians are often positioned to one side of the stage adding in sound effects and songs as the people-styled puppets, dragons, fairies and other ornamental figures dance across the stage.

Jade Emperor Pagoda

Built in 1909 in honour of the supreme Taoist god (the Jade Emperor or King of Heaven, Ngoc Hoang), this is one of the most spectacularly atmospheric temples in Ho Chi Minh City, stuffed with statues of phantasmal divinities and grotesque heroes. The pungent smoke of incense (huong) fills the air, obscuring the exquisite woodcarvings. Its roof encrusted with elaborate tile work, the temple's statues, depicting characters from both Buddhist and Taoist lore, are made from reinforced papier mâché.

Interesting facts: -Caravelle Saigon opened on Christmas Eve, 1959, and was the city’s premier venue for grand balls and functions. Since then it has welcomed countless dignitaries, politicians and celebrities. -In 1975, it was renamed Doc Lap (Independence) Hotel, commemorating Vietnam’s liberation. The original hotel was closed in the mid-1990s for refurbishment, with the addition of the new 24-storey tower, and re-opened on 8 May, 1998. -Saigon Saigon Rooftop Bar, voted the ‘Best Bar’ in the city and Top 10 Exciting Entertainment Venues, dates back to 1959 and retains the original charm of original 10-storey hotel’s rooftop bar. It was once a famous gathering place for war correspondents. -In 2001, Caravelle Saigon hosted the cast and crew filming Graham Greene’s epic novel The Quiet American, starring Sir Michael Caine. -Caravelle Saigon is the most prestigious address in Ho Chi Minh City. Notable VIP guests have included former US President Bill Clinton, Britain’s Princess Anne, movie stars Michael Caine and Brendan Fraser (while filming The Quiet American), award-winning correspondent Brian Barron, fashion accessories and jewelry founder Philippe Charriol, French fashion designer Pierre Cardin, President of South Africa Thabo Mbeki and numerous international ambassadors and senators. - Caravelle Saigon was the tallest building in town up until 1994!
