The Three Cities is a collective description of the three medieval fortified cities of Birgu, Senglea and Cospicua in Malta. The oldest of the Three Cities is Birgu, also know by the title Città Vittoriosa ("Victorious City"), which has existed since the Middle Ages. It also is the most popular town among the Three Cities due to its historical and cultural wealth. The noble military provenance of the Vittoriosa Waterfront has given way through the centuries to the glamour of the super-yachts that now speckle the dedicated dockyard. Vittoriosa’s wharf has been in use since Phoenician times. It was the primary naval base of the Knights of St John, and later of the Royal Navy.
