Completed in 2008, zMAX Dragway hosts National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) events twice a year in the spring and fall. As a track of “firsts,” the best way to describe the “Bellagio of Drag Strips” is by the numbers. The first documented discovery of gold in the US happened right here in Cabarrus County when 12-year-old Conrad Reed discovered a 17-pound gold nugget in Little Meadow Creek. After using it as a doorstop for three years, Conrad’s father John Reed sold the nugget for $3.50 to a jeweler in Fayetteville without realizing its value. Upon his return, he and three friends began searching the creek bed for gold, effectively starting the nation’s first gold rush. Today, this state historic site is the only underground gold mine in North Carolina open to the public. Pan for gold (April-October), explore restored portions of underground tunnels on a guided tour, view exhibits of historic mining equipment and enjoy walking trails. Admission is free; panning is $3 per pan.

Sit-Down Tastings are available on a first come, first served basis and last an average of 15-20 minutes – reservations for groups of 6 or more are requested so we can accommodate everyone in a timely manner. Currently our wine tasting includes a selection of eight Rocky River Vineyards wines as well as samples of our wine slushies and hot mulled wine. The cost for a tasting is $8+tax per person.
