Nestled in Sir Wilfrid Laurier Park, in the heart of the sweeping Edmonton River Valley, the Edmonton Valley Zoo is home to more than 350 animals.
Head over for a chance to see the endangered peregrine falcon, native prairie dogs, a zebra, fox, and bighorn sheep. Bird lovers can catch the snowy owl, bald eagle, and great-horned owl. Hoot twice if you love owls!
Check out the new Polar Extremes exhibit that gives visitors an up-close view of seals, sea lions and arctic foxes. Roving interpreters offer daily demonstrations, programs and talks. Ask about the zoo’s strong conservation focus.
Less than an hour’s drive from a capital city a million strong is a place of quietness, where pristine starry skies shine next to city lights. This is where Cree and Métis have lived and hunted, and generations of families have chosen to picnic and play.
Elk Island National Park is the cornerstone of Canada’s bison conservation story; without this place and the dedication of its people, herds of plains and woods bison would not thrive in Canada today.
Come out for a day trip filled with hiking and canoeing or cross-country skiing and snowshoeing (rentals and tours available). No matter what the season, a perfect wilderness experience is awaiting you and your family at Elk Island National Park.

City Market Downtown:
The City Market Downtown is a farmers' market that has been an integral part of Edmonton’s downtown for more than a century. This year-round market is known for its friendly, open atmosphere and quality products delivered direct by friendly, local farmers, growers and artisans.
Old Strathcona Farmers' Market:
The market rotates a roster of nearly 300 vendors through 185 stalls. On any given Saturday there are over 130 vendors selling only locally produced, handmade products.
124 Grand Market:
The market combines everything Edmontonians love in the summer, from a pack of roving food trucks and live entertainment to talented artists and fresh, local foods.
Do you love learning about history? Visit Fort Edmonton Park and experience four distinct eras in Edmonton’s past: the days of the fur trade, and the pioneer years of 1885, 1905 and 1920.
Visit a reconstruction of the 1846 Hudson Bay Company's Edmonton House, and learn the fascinating history of fur trading in Canada. On 1885 Street, become part of history as you stop in at Jasper House Bakery for a fresh-baked snack, visit the blacksmith and wheelwright, pump water for tea, and see what it was like to be a North West Mounted Policeman. On 1905 Street, visit the famous round barn, play around at the Penny Arcade, or get your picture taken in period costume. Then move forward in time to 1920s Street, and experience the excitement of a real 1920s-style Midway: ride the carousel, take a spin on the Ferris wheel or play games of skill at the arcade.
With mid-summer daylight lasting 17 hours, it’s no wonder the Edmonton region boasts more than 80 golf courses. Take your pick of riverside urban to rolling rural golf courses. Whatever the choice, two things are sure, you can look forward to eventful day with beautiful scenery.
Take a ride through Edmonton on a historic streetcar: see spectacular views, and get a sense of Edmonton’s earlier days.
Ride in a beautifully refurbished trolley car that dates back to the early 1900s. On your trip, get views of the river valley you wouldn’t otherwise see, and feel the breeze coming in through the window as you savor the spectacular journey across the 100-year-old High Level Bridge.
Breathe in colourful and exotic life unfolding at the enchanting Muttart Conservatory. Each of the four iconic pyramids holds a themed garden representing a different world biome and species that hail from Mexico to Madagascar.
Bathe yourself in the lush Tropical pyramid, alive with delicate orchids, a weeping fig, towering banana trees and huge palms. The Arid pyramid bites back, with its spiky cactus and exotic desert species. Australian pampas grass and Eucalyptus trees are two colourful species you’ll find in the Temperate zone. Inventive Muttart staff create seasonal explosions of texture and life in the Feature garden.
If all this tranquil energy whets your appetite, the Culina café is a tantalizing local favourite. Savour artisan creations like farm-fresh roasted chicken with brie and cranberry chutney, or pumpkin hazelnut soup. Leave room for homemade desserts.
Edmonton's river valley is the largest expanse of urban parkland in North America. With over 20 major parks and attractions, 7,400 hectares of land and a river valley that's 22 times the size of New York City's Central Park, there’s tons to explore.
Hit the Trails:
Edmonton's river valley and park systems have 150 kilometres of trails scattered throughout the city just waiting to be used!
Grab a Paddle:
Rent a canoe or kayak to navigate down the scenic North Saskatchewan River and bring along your fishing rod if you want to catch some lake sturgeon or walleye along the way (take a guide with you if you'd like).
Picnics in the Park:
Set up a picnic, roast hotdogs and hamburgers with the public BBQs and toss around the Frisbee or football in a park!
Spend the Day in the River Valley
For a fun day out in the river valley, visit some of Edmonton's coolest attractions. Check out Fort Edmonton Park, Edmonton Valley Zoo, Muttart Conservatory and any of the public golf courses that use the banks of the river valley as a scenic backdrop.
A Winter Wonderland
Cross-country ski, snowshoe along the trails, strap on a pair of skates or check out a few of the ski hills located within city limits!
Whyte Avenue in Old Strathcona has been named one of Canada’s five best shopping neighbourhoods.
Anchored by the funky, bohemian spirit of Whyte Avenue, historic buildings blend with youthful exuberance to make Old Strathcona one of Edmonton’s trendiest neighbourhoods. The city's celebrated arts and cultural community makes its home here, as does a plethora of unique local boutiques, one-of-a-kind art galleries and music shops, and trendy restaurants and cafés.

Take part in a true farm experience, and be one of the over one million guests who have visited Prairie Gardens and Adventure Farm.
Head out for a relaxing and fun day trip into the countryside, only 40 minutes from Edmonton. It’s a 35-acre fully operational working farm, so pick your own fruits and vegetables, including peas, baby potatoes, beans and zucchini. In late summer, walk through three huge corn mazes, enjoy a Corn Fest and, of course, munch on more corn than you could imagine.
If you’re hungry, this is the place to eat. Try the mouth-watering BBQ Beef on a Bun, fresh roasted Dilly Garlic Baby Potatoes, and homegrown zucchini sliders. Top it off with a cold glass of lemonade and a piece of Sturgeon County’s best fudge. Farm living at its finest!
Get started on your river valley adventure with a guided segway tour! You’ll start with a lesson from a certified team member of River Valley Adventure Co. who will offer tips and training. Soon, you’re off on a scenic Segway trek, fully equipped with snow-biting winter tires during the colder months. Your guide will share some of Edmonton’s natural history and keep you warm with wit and natural wonders along the way. Book tickets in advance.
Pull the curtain back on Alberta life and landscape in a remarkable journey from petroglyphs to prehistoric dinosaurs, and from 500 generations of First Peoples to new beginnings on the windswept prairies.
Full-sized moose, grizzlies, mountain lion, and bighorn sheep stare back at you in the Wild Alberta Gallery. Try crawling into the bear den and experience wildlife in their natural habitats. The Natural History Gallery packs a billion years into one visit.
Stories and artifacts spanning 11,000 years of Alberta’s First Peoples history unfold in the Aboriginal Gallery. Travel from the Ice Age to present day, stopping at a bison hunt and northern fishing camp. Afterward, stop into the lovely café and gift shop to finish your visit.
Edmonton Ski Club:
Located in the river valley, directly across from downtown the Edmonton Ski Club boasts 25 skiable acres of machine-made pristine groomed snow. They offer runs for beginner and advanced skiers and snowboarders as well as a mogul run and Terrain Park.
Snow Valley Ski Club:
If you’ve never been on a pair of skis or a snowboard, or are eager to learn more, Snow Valley Ski Club is a great place to gain confidence over 20 acres of skiable terrain. After you hit the slopes, warm up in the lodge where glass walls offer beautiful vistas overlooking Edmonton’s Rainbow Valley.
Rabbit Hill Snow Resort:
Located 15 minutes South West of Edmonton, it is a great escape from the city for the day or even an evening of night skiing.
Eskimos:
Edmonton loves its football. So grab a drink, a hot dog, and join the fun-loving fans at Commonwealth Stadium as they watch their beloved “Eskies” march their way towards a Grey Cup. With only three downs to score a touchdown, you’ll catch some spectacular plays. Watch running backs fly down the field, wide receivers dancing along the sidelines just missing tackles, and long-bomb passes finding open arms.
Oilers:
The high-flying Edmonton Oilers are making a push to claw back from a few seasons of sadness for the fans. Attend a home game at the brand new Rogers Place in the Ice District and watch them battle it out amongst the world's best hockey players.
TELUS World of Science – Edmonton (TWOSE) is a giant laboratory where you can come face-to-face with small sea creatures, learn to program a robot and explore the limits of outer space! Five dynamic and engaging permanent exhibit galleries are designed to educate, engage and entertain. International exhibits like Bodyworlds, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones and Sherlock Holmes set up in the featured exhibit spaces.
The TWOSE main lobby boasts one of the most unique gift shops in the city. It is home to the famous “T-Shirt Wall” featuring all the best science and science-fiction graphic tees, not to mention an endless array of cool DIY science experiments and countless toys, games, gadgets and puzzles for the space, science and technology lover in your life – of any age.
Plan your visit around TWOSE`s Dark Matters parties, an 18+ event where the science is served on the rocks & the adults come out to play. Cash bar, music, exclusive access to all of TWOSE’s permanent galleries and grown-up science experiments are just a few of the highlights.
Become a time traveller and step back in time! History is brought to life at the Ukrainian Culture Heritage Village, an open-air museum depicting early settlement in east central Alberta from 1892-1930.
Explore more than 35 restored historic buildings, including a new two-room school, three Eastern Byzantine Rite churches, a blacksmith shop, working grain elevator, farmsteads, a sod house and more. Immerse yourself in the daily life of the museum’s costumed role-players who portray real pioneers. Interaction with these “real characters” reveals the personal side of immigration, settlement and life in the past.
Make your Ukrainian experience complete with mouth-watering Ukrainian food at the concession. Every day there’s something new to discover as you immerse yourself in this vital part of Alberta’s history.
West Edmonton Mall is the Mt. Everest of indoor entertainment, shopping, and attractions in North America. A place you have to visit at least once in your lifetime. Part adventure park entertainment complex, shopping and dining destination, the Mall spans the equivalent of 48 city blocks.
Let out a gasp of excitement as you slip in from the cold into the tropical setting of World Waterpark, home to the world’s largest indoor wave pool. Later, climb aboard a full-size pirate ship, or skate beneath the stars under a glass dome.
If you’re in a shopping mood, there are over 800 shops and services, from brand name chains to one-of-a kind boutiques. Afterward, check out the casino, movie theatres, mini golf courses, or catch penguins frolicking at Sea Life Caverns.
Hungry after riding a Galaxyland roller coaster for the fourth time? Stroll down New Orleans-themed Bourbon street for some fine dining, then take in a live show. Or hit Chinatown and shop the colourful T & T Asian Market.
