The largest Civil War museum west of the Mississippi features weapons, uniforms, artifacts, and Victorian-era dresses from the Civil War. The National Cowgirl Museum is much more than memorabilia, it is the only museum dedicated to the pioneering spirit of the women of the American West. Live the cowgirl experience through interactive exhibits, sweeping film presentations, and intriguing stories from the past and present that everyone – from ages 2 to 102 – will enjoy. Entry is included with Fort Worth Museum of Science and History exhibit admission.
The Fort Worth Museum of Science and History recently opened the doors to its new facility designed by the internationally acclaimed architectural firm Legorreta + Legorreta. The Museum is home to more than 175,000 historical and scientific objects with an emphasis on Texas and the Southwest. The science collection consists of many thousands of catalogued specimens that represent the disciplines of botany, entomology, malacology, ornithology, mineralogy, herpetology, mammalogy, invertebrate zoology, meteoritic and paleontology. In August 2008, the Museum’s Omni Theater returned to action, offering new guest amenities while marking a major step in the construction of the Museum’s new facility.
Founded to house Fort Worth legend Amon Carter’s collection of Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell American art, after more than 50 years it still brings American artwork to Fort Worth. The museum includes Remington’s “A Dash for the Timber” and Thomas Eakins’ “Swimming.” The museum was designed by The Glass House creator Phillip Johnson, who also won the Pritzker Architecture Prize, adding to the list of outstanding architects who contributed to Fort Worth.
This museum has been housed in many buildings throughout the city. It now sits at the intersection of Camp Bowie and University as one of Fort Worth’s architectural masterpieces. It was designed by Tadao Ando, winner of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, which is considered the highest distinction in the field of architecture. A reflecting pool and “Y” shaped columns create a surrealistic experience for visitors. The museum features the second largest collection of modern art in the nation.
The Kimbell’s permanent collection contains holdings ranging from the third millennium B.C. to the mid-20th century, and includes major works by Fra Angelico, Velázquez, Bernini, Rembrandt, Goya, Monet, Picasso, Mondrian, and Matisse. The collection comprises Asian and non-Western as well as European art. And in addition to the permanent collection, the museum features special exhibits on display throughout the year. In fall 2009, the Kimbell became the new permanent home of Michelangelo’s “The Torment of Saint Anthony”, the only Michelangelo painting in the United States. Designed by world-renowned architect Louis Kahn, the museum is often referred to as one of the most epic structures of the 20th century.
