Büyükada, İstanbul'un dokuz adasının şehir merkezidir. 5.400 metrekarelik bir yüzey alanına sahiptir. Nüfus yaz aylarında 10 ila 15 kat artar. Binaların çoğu sadece yaz aylarında tatil evi olarak kullanılmaktadır. Ada iki tepeye sahiptir: kuzeyde 164 metre yüksekliğindeki Isa Tepesi (Hristos) ve güneyde 202 metre yüksekliğindeki Yuce Tepe (Aya Yorgi). Büyükada'nın yerleşim alanlarının dışındaki yaprakları incelendiğinde, Akdeniz çalılık yer örtüsüne sahip iğne yapraklı ormanların (Pinus brutia Ten.) yaygın olduğu görülebilir. Adada orman oluşturan tek ağaç türü kırmızı çamlardır. Ada, Türkiye'deki kırmızı çamların doğal alanının en kuzey sınırında olduğundan, toprak örtüsü çok sığ ve ağaçlar yüzyıllardır insan etkisi altında olduğundan, tek tek tek ağaçların şekil bozukluğuna ve bodur olmasına neden olur. Adadaki ikinci yerli bitki örtüsü Akdeniz çalılıklarıdır. Akdeniz çalılıkları, Türkiye'nin Akdeniz bölgesindeki bitki yaşamı arasında en karakteristik olanıdır. Adada ikincil olarak oluşan Akdeniz çalılık unsurları oldukça uzundur. Öte yandan, adanın yerleşik bölgelerinde, birçok egzotik bitki koşullara adapte olmuştur
