King Jaime II ordered to build this palace at the beginning of the fourteenth century so that his son Sancho could find a relief to the asthma disease he suffered from.It is believed it was built on the old fortress of a Moorish wali called Mussa or Muça from where comes the name: Valldemossa.The palace was one of the rural castles of the Majorcan dinasty used to get some rest. The old quarter from Palma, with a medieval layout of narrow winding streets, is the most interesting part of the city for visitors and is where most of Palma´s monuments are concentrated. It is separated from the area of the Eixampla by the avingudes – wide streets which occupy the space where the city walls stood, which were built in the renaissance period and which were knocked down at the beginning of the twentieth century. Some remains of these walls can be seen at the part of the old town nearest the sea – at Baluard del Príncep, in front of the Cathedral of La Seu and the Baluard de Sant Pere – and there is also a small fragment on view at the underground car park of Via Roma. It is in this part of the city where the Mallorcan nobility used to live, residing in homes which are genuine palaces and which, along with the churches and convents, stand out within the layout of the city.

The historical origins of the Chapter of the Cathedral of Mallorca date back to the very beginnings of the restoration of the Church in Mallorca. In 1240, Pope Gregory IX gave the first Bishop of Mallorca, Ramon de Torrella, permission to establish the chapter with canons and dignities. Since then, the Cathedral Chapter has become the group of priests that is responsible for carrying out solemn liturgical celebrations and also for performing the services entrusted to it by canon law or by the Bishop. One of the main duties of the Chapter is to promote the Cathedral as the seat of the Bishop’s magisterium as pastor of Church in Mallorca, and as a sign of the unity in the faith of Mallorcan believers, and to make the Cathedral the centre of the liturgical life of the diocese because it is the Bishop’s church.
