Quietly imposing from the outside, this glorious piece of modern Islamic architecture was a gift to the nation from Sultan Qaboos to mark his 30th year of reign. The main prayer hall is breathtakingly beautiful. The Persian carpet alone measures 70m by 60m wide, making it the second-largest hand-loomed Iranian carpet in the world; it took 600 women four years to weave. Mwasalat buses stop outside the mosque. The mosque, which can accommodate 20,000 worshippers, including 750 women in a private musalla (prayer hall), is an active place of worship, particularly for Friday prayers. Visitors are required to dress modestly, covering arms and legs and avoiding tight clothing. Women and girls (aged seven and above) must cover their hair. An abaya (full-length dress) and scarf can be hired from the mosque cafe and gift shop for OR2.5; some form of ID is required as a deposit. Construction In 1992, Qaboos bin Said al Said, Sultan of Oman, directed that his country should have a Grand Mosque. A competition for its design took place in 1993 and after a site was chosen at Bausher construction commenced in December 1994. Building work, which was undertaken by Carillion Alawi LLC,[2] took six years and seven months.[3] The mosque is built from 300,000 tonnes of Indian sandstone. The main musalla or prayer hall is square and 74.4 by 74.4 metres (244 by 244 feet) with a central dome rising to a height of 50 metres (160 ft) above the floor.[4] The dome and the main minaret (90 metres (300 ft)) and four flanking minarets (45.5 metres (149 ft)) are the mosque’s chief visual features. The main musalla can hold over 6500 worshippers, while the women's musalla can accommodate 750 worshipers. The outer paved ground can hold 8000 worshipers and there is additional space available in the interior courtyard and the passageways, making a total capacity of up to 20,000 worshipers.[5] The mosque is built on a site occupying 416,000 m2 (4,480,000 sq ft),[4] and the complex extends to cover an area of 40,000 m2 (430,000 sq ft). The newly built Grand Mosque was inaugurated by Sultan of Oman on May 4, 2001 to celebrate 30 years of his reign.[6]

One place to get a feel for local Omani culture is on the main one-way road that runs in an ellipse through the heart of Seeb. Wadi Bahayis St is flanked by the gold souq, with its windows of bangles and bridal chains, and by shops and tailors selling dishdashas (shirt-dresses worn by men), kumars (caps) and abayas (robe-like dresses worn by women) The route doubles back along Souq St. A circuit only takes a few minutes by car, but you could spend half a day exploring these two roads on foot. Passing near the old souq, the road veers to the left just after shops selling Arabian-style sofas and sedans and Omani honey. Along Souq St there are outlets selling Omani-style traditional ladies’ clothing with colourful anklets and embroidered smocking. Interspersed with the tailors are ‘wedding services’ shops selling strings of lights and outrageous bridal thrones. Towards the end of Souq St, and completing the loop, you'll come across many carpentry workshops selling mandoos (bridal chests). Usually black or terracotta-red and decorated with brass tacks, these make a fun souvenir. A small box costs OR10 or a large chest OR50, with many sizes in between.

Muscat, Feb 24 – The Organising Committee of Sur Al Hadid Beach Carnival, spearheaded by Muscat Municipality, the Ministry of Tourism, Oman Tourism Development Company (OMRAN) and Muscat Eat, announced on Sunday the official launch date of the event between March 7-9 at Sur Al Hadid Corniche in Wilayat Al Seeb, Muscat. The first-ever beach carnival is driven by the joined efforts of the key partners, as part of the Implementation, Support and Follow-up Unit (Tanfeedh) initiatives to boost the local tourism through better utilization of the beaches to host unique tourism events.Muscat Municipality has taken into consideration the importance of improving public areas in Muscat.
