Archaeological Museum - Varna

he inauguration of the Varna Archaeological Museum and its further development is closely connected with the names of the two brothers Herman and Karel Škorpil, Czechs by origin, who came to help with the education and culture of their sister Slavonic nation following the Liberation of Bulgaria from the Turkish Yoke. In 1894 they permanently settled in Varna. On 12 December 1901, a group of socially active figures and teachers established the Varna Archaeological Society that for decades since has been the basic motivating power for interest and study in the history of Varna, Varna Region, and Northeast Bulgaria. The inauguration of an archaeological museum was a task of prime importance for the Society. On June 11, 1906 the first exhibition of the Museum was officially opened in a room of the Girls’ High School. Karel Škorpil was elected as director of the Museum and remained in that post till his death in 1944.

Aladzha Monastery

History of the monastery: Aladzha Monastery was established 11-12th century when the hermits first inhabited it. However, its caves were inhabited early in the Byzantine period, as the monastery was under the influence of a religious teaching which was spread in Byzantine and Bulgaria at that time. The first archaeological finds, coins and pottery pieces were found in the caves. The religious movement taught about the energy of God - "isichasm" or "hesychasm" (a religion with a main principle of silence and of isolation from the society). Under the influence of ‘isichasm’ the holy rock cloister experienced its heyday during the time of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. The life in Aladzha Monastery declined when Bulgaria fell under Ottoman Rule. The name of Aladzha Monastery comes from the word of Turkish origin for colourful ("aladjha", ” aladja”) due most probably to the bright colours of its wall paintings, dating back to the early Middle Ages. Presumably all unique creations and frescoes in the monastery by the monks must have been bursting with colour at one time. Differently coloured incredible frescoes dated back to 13th-14th century can be still seen on the walls of Aladzha Monastery, but only few of them are preserved. The monastery's history fascinates all its visitors who always come back again. Unforgettable journey through history and religion! Aladzha Monastery was declared a national monument of culture and antiquity.

Residence Euxinograd

Historical Landmark
Prince Battenberg visited Varna in 1880 and he was welcomed at the monastery “St. Dimitar”, which was situated at the same place, where now the residence stands. The monarch liked the local nature so much, that two years later the Varna municipality bestowed him the monastery and its adjoining lands. The palace park is an integral component of the Evksinograd complex. Prince Ferdinand attracted French park architects to design the 800 decare park in 1888. The project involved a rare tree species collection – from black oak to Atlantic cedar, which are the only species on the Balkan Peninsula. The bare and stony areas were covered in fertile soil, mostly taken from the valley of Kamchiya river. Greenhouses were built northeast of the palace for wintering of the palm trees and flower production. More than 500 flower species and 200 sapling species are grown there and in the arboretum. In 1891 a palace winery was built as a part of the complex and a successor of the old monastery cellar. The initiative belongs to prince Ferdinand, and the design was made by a German architect. The building is a picturesque house in Bulgarian Revival style. It includes two underground levels, a host wing, a laboratory, a bottling workshop, administrative offices and a degustation room. The size of the winery is as the one of a small boutique production. Another landmark in the area of the residence is the ruins of the late ancient fortress Kastritsi in the northeastern part of the park. The complex offers accommodation. At the disposal of the guests there is a restaurant, a barbecue, as well as opportunities for practicing of various sports, such as table tennis, tennis, basketball, volleyball, fitness, bowling, water skiing, surfing, etc.
