The George R. Brown Convention Center opened on September 26, 1987 on the east side of Downtown Houston, Texas, United States.
The center was named for the prominent Houstonian George R. Brown, an entrepreneur, civic leader and philanthropist. Brown’s Texas Eastern Corporation donated six of the 11 blocks required to build the convention center. The Center is owned and operated by the City of Houston, Convention & Entertainment Facilities Department. The facility was completed with a price tag of $104.9 million, requiring 30 months and more than 1,200 workers. The sleek 100 foot (30 m) high red-white-and-blue building replaced the obsolete Albert Thomas Convention Center, which was later redeveloped into the Bayou Place entertainment complex in the downtown Houston Theater District.
The first convention held in the George R. Brown Convention Center began on October 11, 1987 for the American Society of Travel Agents. Renovations began on July 28, 2001 to expand the convention center and build an adjacent 1,200 room convention headquarters hotel at a cost of $165 million and requiring 27 months of construction. The adjacent hotel is the Hilton Americas-Houston and is connected to the convention center via several skywalks. The project expanded the center from 1,150,000 square feet (107,000 m2) to 1,800,000 square feet (107,000 to 167,000 m²). Three exhibit halls were added to increase exhibition space from 451,500 square feet (41,950 m2) to 853,500 square feet (42,000 to 79,000 m²) and sixty-two meeting rooms were added for a total of 105. Completion of the project concluded in September 2003 a few months before Super Bowl XXXVIII.

This magnificent six-acre entertainment and dining complex is a 500,000-gallon aquatic wonderland, home to over 300 species of aquatic life from around the globe. Discovery Green is a beautiful, vibrant 12-acre park in the heart of downtown Houston that opened to the public in April 2008. The park was envisioned by several committed Houston philanthropists, who saw the space as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create an urban park that would redefine the landscape of downtown. In less than four years, the site that became Discovery Green was transformed from an undeveloped, concrete eyesore into a beautiful and vibrant destination adjacent to the George R. Brown Convention Center. Discovery Green exemplifies a successful public-private partnership between the City of Houston, the Houston First Corporation and Discovery Green Conservancy, the nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that operates and maintains the park. The Conservancy produces hundreds of free events each year and receives no direct city funding.
With more than seven million annual visits, the Houston Museum District is one of the top cultural districts in the country.

The design of the stadium roof provides a very flexible rigging configuration for major audio and visual presentations. 200 suites complement NRG Stadium.
The Theater District is the height of class, sophistication and any other word one would associate with a night of culture. Downtown’s premier theater venues, Alley Theatre, Jones Hall and Wortham Theater Center, all sit within a block from one another with the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts located just a hop, skip and a jump away. Downtown destinations Bayou Place, AMC Houston 8 and family favorite Downtown Aquarium are also located within just a few blocks of the major theaters and many dining destinations abound leaving you confident you won’t miss the curtain call. An abundance of parks, fountains and bayou trails coaxes passers-by to ditch their high heels (or penny loafers) and strap on some running shoes. A day of exercise or a night of fancy frivolity can both be achieved here!

The Memorial Park Golf Course is known as one of the best municipal courses in the nation and is visited by more than 60,000 patrons each year. The course originally began as a 9-hole course with sand greens, built near the hospital at Camp Logan for use by convalescent soldiers (1912). In 1935, following the closing of the hospital, golf course architect John Bredemus redesigned the course. It opened in July of 1936 and, according to legend, John Bredemus remarked that this was his “greatest golf course ever.”
Through the years, the course has hosted many famous golfers, including Babe Didrikson Zaharias, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Jimmy Demaret. It was the home of the Houston Open from 1951 to 1963. In 1994, on behalf of Mayor Bob Lanier, Houston Park Board member Nancy Reynolds began a campaign to restore the golf course. Great effort went to preserving its historical quality while allowing for proper maintenance for the future of the course. In 1995, the newly renovated 600-acre course opened with a lighted driving range, putting and chipping greens, and a beautiful new clubhouse facility.
