The city of Roermond is on the water’s edge. The artificial lakes around Roermond called the Maasplassen are part of the largest continuous water sports area in the Netherlands.
The diversity of the Maasplassen area makes it an absolute mecca for all water sports enthusiasts. You can swim there, surf, sail, dive, row, canoe or choose a faster or more extreme water sport such as water skiing, flyboarding and wakeboarding. In the summer months the beautiful beaches and hip beach clubs are the place to be. Boat owners can moor in one of the large or smaller marinas, all of which have modern facilities. There are plenty of excellent fishing spots as long as you have a fishing permit such as the Dutch VISpas or a weekly permit.

To get a good impression of the size and beauty of the River Meuse and the Maasplassen, we recommend stepping on board one of the round trip boats.

Its shops range from little boutiques in historic buildings in the city centre to the Designer Outlet Roermond that attracts more than eight million fashion-loving bargain hunters every year. The centre also has many charming squares where you can stop for a drink and enjoy savouring the delights of Limburg.
Retail Park Roermond and the home and garden mall, Huis- en Tuinboulevard, are other places to shop just beyond the centre. The shops in Roermond are open every Sunday.

De Meinweg has a unique, naturally terraced landscape, with steep rock walls rising between the terraces. This is, geologically speaking, exceptional for the Netherlands. The terraces were formed over tens of thousands of years, through erosion by the River Maas and shifts in the earth's crust along the three fault lines that run through the area.
Woods, heath land, fens, and streams tumbling through small valleys create a varied landscape in De Meinweg. De Meinweg is the only place in Limburg where adders can still be found. The local snake has been included in the Meinweg logo to celebrate this fact.

After all, these are the best-known works by architect and designer Pierre Cuypers. And did you know that Cuypers also restored the 'Ridderzaal' in The Hague? And that includes the throne on which the Dutch King speaks every year.

The Cuypershuis in Roermond is the former home and workshop of architect and designer Pierre Cuypers (1827 -1921). He was born and raised in Roermond. In the Cuypershuis Museum you can learn more about this famous architect and about living and working in the 19th century. Here you will find a permanent exhibition as well as various temporary exhibitions. Get to know Pierre Cuypers: his life and work as an architect and how he was a source of inspiration for many, but also how he used his house as a showroom of his work. You will see topics that were important for the designer of the 19th century as well as current ones. In short: The Cuypershuis is a constantly changing experience for everyone!

This new way of discovering a city via a walking tour with various challenges is a great way to learn about its history and discover its layout.

Each Tourist Scavenger Hunt is around 40 steps, 2-3 hours in duration on a 3-4km circuit which brings you back to the start.
