香港大球场（前身为政府大球场）建于1952年。它由香港赛马会（HKJC）于1992年重新开发，于1994年重新开放，由英国温布利国际管理，由香港赛马会聘用。1998年，当时的市政委员会接管了体育场的管理并进行了归还工程。在康乐及文化事务署（康文署）于二零零零年成立后，体育场移交予康乐及文化事务署（康文署）。2015年4月，政府与香港赛马会合作，对草地球场进行了全面重建，以此作为提高其质量和耐久性的长期措施。
体育场经过精心设计，设备齐全，可举办各种体育、宗教和社区活动。该体育场最多可容纳4万个座位，是目前香港最大的户外多用途康乐和运动场地。附近的扫杆埔游乐场是体育馆举办大型体育赛事时的辅助场地，可供机构租用以进行体育比赛和训练。
