The shop is a popular tourist attraction because it stocks rare items in the modern world – items such as sticky toffee, boiled sweets and authentic old century butter churns. The shop also stocks rare antiques and traditional South African biltong (a dried spiced meat similar to jerky). Oom Samie's also has an adjoining restaurant (the Koffiehuis or the coffee house) and sells a selection of timeless wines.

The vision of the centre was first conceived in the late 1990s when it was recognised that a truly international convention centre would fill an obvious gap in the city of Cape Town’s tourism infrastructure, and have the potential to deliver a phenomenal impact on the local, provincial and national economy. As a result, the CTICC was born, with the City of Cape Town and the Provincial Government of the Western Cape as its largest shareholders - effectively putting ownership of the centre in the hands of the people of the city. By June 2003, it had achieved this vision, and the focus of the holding company shifted to overseeing the management of the centre, driving its continued development, and enhancing the contribution it makes to the growth of business tourism in the Western Cape. The CTICC has continued to raise the profile of Cape Town as a sought after international leisure and business tourism destination. It has also maintained and grown the economic and social contributions it makes to the city of Cape Town, the Western Cape Province, and the country as a whole.

A stroll from the Hotel is all it takes to explore the rich attractions of Stellenbosch. For heritage lovers the town offers arguably more museums, galleries and historic experiences than any other village in the Cape. Stroll oak-lined avenues like Dorp Street to take in Cape Dutch, Georgian and Victorian architectural gems. Visit the period-restored homes of the Village Museum, step back to early Dutch history at sites like the Drosdy, or view major art and artifact collections at the superb Rupert and Sasol galleries. There are abundant boutique, market and shopping opportunities including Oom Samie se Winkel, purveyor of goods quaint and curious. A hop aboard the Vine Hopper shuttle takes one to any of the 200 cellars and historic estates of this famous wine region, with opportunities to sample wine, absorb Cape heritage or enjoy an evening of entertainment at open-air amphitheaters like those at the Spier or Oude Libertas estates. For outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers, hiking and mountain biking trails, golf at signature courses, and the beaches of the nearby False Bay coastline, 25 km away, are a few of the many outings available, most of which can be arranged through the hotel concierge.
