Building was started by Antonio Sillero and later continued by Juan Bautista de Toledo between 1559 and 1564 for the Monasterio de las Clarisas. This Monastery occupies the ancient palace of Carlos I and Isabel of Portugal. In 1535, their daughter Juana, who later founded the Convent, was born there. She herself is buried in one of the chapels, with a praying funerary sculpture by Pompeyo Leoni. Regarding its architecture, the Plateresque façade and the magnificent Renaissance stairway are the most interesting original elements. The interior was completely refurbished in the 18th century by Diego de Villanueva. The structure and many decorative elements from the Plateresque palace are conserved in the cloister. Juana and her sister María, the widowed empress who died here in 1603, both lived in this Monastery. Al fresco paintings in the stairway and the Capilla del Milagro from the 17th century are preserved. The tapestries woven in Brussels on Rubens canvases are highlights, representing the Triumph of the Eucharist. They were entrusted to this Monastery by the daughter of Philip II, Princess Isabel Clara Eugenia, Sovereign of the Netherlands. The Monastery has been classified as a Site of Cultural Interest, obtaining the distinction of European Museum of 1987.

This bustling square located bang in the centre of Madrid is one of the city’s most famous sites. With its semi-circular shape, it is a junction for many of the city’s historical and busiest streets such as Mayor, Arenal, Alcalá and Preciados, as well as the starting point for all major radial roads in Spain. Originally the site of one of the city’s gates, Puerta del Sol should be at the top of your list of places to visit. Sitting atop the Casa de Correos building, the current headquarters of the Madrid regional government, you’ll find the famous clock that all eyes turn to on the last day of the year. For over a century now tradition has it that people across the country usher in the New Year by eating 12 lucky grapes to the twelve chimes of midnight struck by this clock. A stone slab on the pavement in front of the main entrance to the Casa de Correos marks Spain’s Kilometre 0, the starting point for all major radial roads in Spain. Across the square, at the beginning of Calle Alcalá, Madrid’s longest street, you’ll find the famous Oso y Madroño. The official symbol of the city, the statue of a bear nuzzling a strawberry tree is a popular meeting spot for Madrileños.

The building of the Teatro Real, as we know it today, is the result of several renovations over the last 150 years. Since it was opened in 1850 the building has been remodeled several times, used for different purposes and occasionally closed. The present building was completely restored and remodeled in 1997, with 65,000 m2 of floor area, capacity for 1746 people, and with one of the most advanced and innovative stages in Europe." Located in one of the most important historical quarters of Madrid, the Teatro Real is at the hub of the Spanish capital’s most ambitious 19th-century town planning project: next to the Austrias district and facing the Royal Palace. The inside space of 78.210 square meters in the Teatro Real make this iconic building unique. The main auditorium, which seats 1746 (depending on the size of the orchestra pit), is a copy of the 1850 original when the theatre was inaugurated. Behind its curtain, this landmark building conceals one of the most advanced theatre stages in Europe, with innovative technology permitting various sets to be used and replaced at record speed thanks to a system of overlapping platforms. As well as its technical innovations, the building features elegantly decorated areas, such as the large salons on the second floor, typical of a 19th-century opera house, with notable works of art.

The Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum, or simply the Thyssen, is an art museum in Madrid, located near the Prado Museum on one of the city's main boulevards. It is known as part of the "Golden Triangle of Art", which also includes the Prado and the Reina Sofia national galleries. The Thyssen-Bornemisza fills the historical gaps in its counterparts' collections: in the Prado's case this includes Italian primitives and works from the English, Dutch and German schools, while in the case of the Reina Sofia it concerns Impressionists, Expressionists, and European and American paintings from the 20th century.

The museum’s collections come from two sources, the old MEAC (Spanish Museum of Contemporary Art) collections and acquisitions made by the museum itself, in addition to works bequeathed by the Catalan artists Salvador Dalí and Joan Miró. The permanent collection is located on the second floor, divided into rooms dedicated to Nonell, Anglada Camarasa, Iturrino, Zuloaga, Solana and María Blanchard, among other early 20th-century Spanish painters; the Cubist movement, Picasso, Dalí, Miró, and a room entitled "Ideas". Temporary exhibitions are held in the museum’s main venue, the Velázquez Palace and the Crystal Palace. The latest trends by the newest up-and-coming artists are on display in the area called "Espacio UNO", which occupies the ground floor of the main building. Picasso's "Guernica" is one of the most important works exhibited here.
