Women in Business Takeaways

Women face a variety of challenges—and opportunities—as they navigate the waters of a career in the meeting and event space.

One of today's hottest topics is The Wage Gap. Many people are quick to blame discrimination as the sole source of pay disparity. But, there are many variables that can impact the bottom line of a woman's paycheck. In some circumstances, women struggle with salary negotiation. Understanding the nuances and complexities of internal and external networking, building a robust, quantitative and qualitative strategy, and positioning one's market value are all critical steps in negotiating pay.

Emotional Intelligence

Are you Emotionally Intelligent (EI)? EI is defined as "the capacity to be aware of, control, and express one's emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically." Some daily showcases of EI could include: striving to control one's thoughts, practicing authenticity and empathy, protecting oneself from emotional sabotage, or praising others. Like IQ, a person's EQ can shift and change over time. That means you can invest in exercising and developing your EI.

Stress and Anxiety

One challenge that many women in the events industry share is addressing and managing stress and anxiety. Work anxiety is never just work anxiety. It often bleeds into your personal life and affects your physical and mental health. From medication to therapy to internalizing ongoing feelings of panic, too many event professionals have voiced privately that they suffer from chronic, work-related uneasiness. Whether stemming from inside or outside the office, chronic anxiety takes a toll on your happiness, your energy level, and your productivity. However, there are a number of strategies that may help control or ease work-related stress and anxiety.

Workplace Bullying

One of the greatest triggers for stress and anxiety is workplace bullying, and unfortunately, woman-on-woman harassment is on the rise. So, why are we picking on each other? According to new research, one of the major reasons we don’t see women being promoted is because women at higher levels do not help other women get ahead. Women at the top experience something called “value threat” which causes them to not want to help other women. Though this may be disappointing (or all too familiar) to read, there is one clear solution that could help address this issue and make a real impact: cross-mentorship. There is a great need for younger professional women to learn from their elders, and for more senior professional women to leave a legacy and pave the way for future generations to succeed.
